Introduction : Shipping is continuously growing industry, and trained persons find jobs in Indian and foreign companies. Attempts are being made to create new openings and facilitate employment of ratings. GP Rating candidates are those who have been trained in both Deck and Engine Room duties. Such ratings may be employed in either department according to the needs of the company. Ratings participate in seamanship activities, cargo handling, maintenance work, operation and maintenance of machinery.
Duties of a General Purpose Rating (GP Rating) :

Starting January 2012 entry batches, all trainees seeking admission in GP Rating Course at Government approved ratings training institutes will need to pass the Common Entrance Test (CET) conducted by Board of Examinations for Seafarers Trust (BES).
Test components :
1. Written Test (English, Maths, and Science).
2. Physical endurance test.
3. Psychometric test (to be introduced in the next phase).
10th Std 40% aggregate, Science and Mathematics and minimum 40% in English, Or I.T.I. - 2 Year Engineering Trades from Govt. Approved Institute with minimum 50% aggregate marks in final year and minimum 40% in English in 10th std.
Note :Selection of the candidates and their admissions will be through Combined Entrance Test conducted by Board of Examinations for Seafarers Trust & it is mandatory for candidates to qualify in CET test & Phoenix Maritime Services Pvt. Ltd. is Not Responsible, If Candidates fail to qualify Board of Examinations for Seafarers Trust CET TEST.
Test features : 1. Written test duration of 1.5 hour," Medium of test: English To test in (English, Maths, and Science) (50:50:50)

The written question paper will have questions on three subjects i.e. English, Mathematics & Science and the questions will be at 10th standard level. (Test will be in English) English (comprehension, grammar, composition and vocabulary) Marks: 50,

2.Physical Endurance Test :- Each candidate will be required to undergo Physical Endurance Test immediately after the written test. In case the physical endurance test cannot be completed on the same day, the remaining candidates will have to report back to the examination center on the following day. Physical endurance test will be conducted under guidance and supervision of physical training instructors. The following will be the structure of the Physical Endurance Test.
a. Running 400 m - within 4 minutes.
b. Uthak - Baithak 20 times - within 1.0 minutes.
c. Push Ups 10 times - within 0.5 minutes.
d. Carry a weight of 25 kg for a distance of 10 meters.
e. Pass under tables or through narrow space (about 0.75m x 0.75m, and 3.5 meters long).
f. Go up and down about 10 steps of a staircase twice.
